Travel guide – the cotswolds

Overview

The Cotswolds region in England personifies country quaintness. With names like Chipping Campden, Moreton-in-Marsh and Stow-on-the-Wold, the Cotswold towns and villages have a fairy-tale-like air, with small bridges over shallow rivers, colourful gardens leading up to thatched cottages and Morris-dancing in the town square. Here, life doesn't seem to change much over the centuries, and the inhabitants of its cottages and manors appear to retain a pastoral naivety. It's hard not to feel the rural tranquillity, and visitors may well feel as though they've stepped into one of Constable's paintings. Due to their proximity to Stratford-Upon-Avon and Oxford, Cotswold Bed-and-Breakfasts are a popular choice with tourists.

Climate

England weather is very changeable and unpredictable, but generally summers are warm and winters are cold, and temperatures are milder than those on the continent. Temperatures do not usually drop below 32°F (0°C) in winter, and in summer they hardly reach 90°F (32°C). July and August are the warmest months, although they are also the wettest, while January and February is the coldest time of year. Rainfall is fairly evenly distributed throughout the year, but late winter/early spring (February to March) is the driest period. The Lake District is England's wettest region.

Getting Around

Coach tours can be organised around the Cotswolds, and there are bus and rail links, but the best way to discover the region is to explore by car.
